Struggling with understanding the changes in the federal and West Australian state battery rebates? We’ve put together a guide on what you can do, how the grants stack, and how you can get your battery system installed. Read on to find out more.
Starting 1 July 2025, Australian households and small businesses can access substantial rebates on home battery systems through the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program and the WA Government’s Residential Battery Scheme.
🔋 Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program
The Federal Government has allocated $2.3 billion to assist households and small businesses in installing battery storage systems.
Key Details:
- Discount: Approximately 30% off the cost of installing a battery system.
- Eligibility: Available to households and small businesses installing batteries with new or existing rooftop solar systems.
- Battery Size: Systems between 5 kWh and 100 kWh are eligible.
- Administration: Delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES).
- Start Date: Applies to batteries installed on or after 1 July 2025.
This initiative aims to reduce electricity bills by enabling households to store excess solar energy for use during peak times, enhancing energy independence and contributing to grid stability.
🌞 WA Residential Battery Scheme
Complementing the federal program, the WA Government’s scheme offers additional incentives:
Rebate Amounts:
- Synergy Customers: $130 per kWh, up to a maximum of $1,300.
- Horizon Power Customers: $380 per kWh, up to a maximum of $3,800.
Additional Support:
- No-Interest Loans: Eligible households with a combined annual income below $210,000 can access loans up to $10,000, repayable over 10 years.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a residential property in Western Australia with an electricity account from Synergy or Horizon Power.
- Battery systems must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready.
- Installation must be carried out by registered retailers and installers.
- Batteries must be on the approved equipment list (see full list here).
By combining both federal and state rebates, eligible households could significantly reduce the upfront cost of installing a home battery system.
⚡ Why Act Now?
With the launch of these programs, demand for battery installations is expected to surge, potentially leading to:
- Longer Wait Times: High demand may result in scheduling delays.
- Increased Prices: Suppliers might raise prices due to heightened demand.
- Limited Rebate Allocations: Rebates are subject to availability and may run out quickly.
Planning ahead ensures you can take full advantage of these incentives and secure your installation in a timely manner.
