Side passages are usually where the bins live. At this Brentwood home, the narrow run between the house and the slatted timber fence turned out to be a good spot for a battery: out of the way and sheltered by the walls on both sides.

What Went In

A 5kW Growatt SPH 5000TL-HUB hybrid inverter
Three Growatt ALP 5.0L-E1 battery modules, for 15kWh of storage
12 Trina Solar Vertex S+ 475W panels, making up a 5.7kW solar system

The Growatt system stacks vertically, with the inverter on top and the battery modules beneath it, so the whole thing takes up little more floor space than a bin. Shehan Gunasinghe mounted it against the red brick with the isolator alongside and full safety signage on the wall.

On the Tiles

The terracotta roof is broken up by hips and a few different pitches, so the 12 panels went on in several small groups across different faces. Each group is square to the tiles and sits low on its rails.

At 5.7kW of solar and 15kWh of storage, this is a modest, well-proportioned system. The panels cover daytime use and top up the battery, and the battery carries the evening. If you’re after something similar, we installed an almost identical Growatt system in Balga, and Growatt’s residential storage range has more detail on the hardware. Closer to home, there’s a FoxESS system just down the road in Booragoon.
