On a clear day, the view from this Gwelup roof runs out over the neighbouring rooftops to the tree line in the distance, which is a nice perk for whoever is up there working. For Carl Holmes and the crew, the job itself was an 11.4kW solar system of Trina Solar Vertex S+ 475W panels on terracotta tiles, backed by a tall GoodWe battery stack at ground level.
That stack is a 10kW GoodWe ESA Series inverter with four battery modules sitting underneath it, giving the home 33.28kWh of storage. With nearly three kilowatt-hours of battery for every kilowatt of panels, this system leans toward storage. On a good day the 24 panels have enough capacity to run the house and push a solid charge into the battery, and that stored energy is what carries the evening and overnight load.
The panels are laid out in three groups, stepping across the roof to work around its hips while keeping each group on a useful aspect. Tiled roofs take a bit more care than Colorbond, since every mounting point means lifting and refitting tiles, and the finished rows sit square and level on their rails.
The battery went into a sheltered brick corner beside the house, with the isolators and warning signage mounted above it and a steel bollard standing at the front. The GoodWe ESA is an all-in-one design, so there’s no separate inverter box on the wall. Everything is housed in the one white cabinet, which keeps the corner tidy.
